Big Sky Draft Horse Expo Carriage Show

An educational display of various carriages, buggies, wagons, and implements that were used in the settlement of our country.

While horses, mules, and oxen provided the power, it was the ingenuity and inventiveness of many farmers and manufacturers to design and build vehicles and implements to make use of this power. These range from pleasure vehicles, commercial/people movers, work vehicles, and farm implements.

These vehicles and implements range from fine carriages to humble farm wagons and implements. This display educates and entertains. While there are those that remember when these were the primary means of transportation, most of us can only imagine and wonder how life was in the draft horse era. A booklet lists each item with a description of those items and their use.

This display provides examples of antique carriages in original condition, restored originals, vehicles reproduced from originals and farm implements.

Horse drawn vehicles also had accessories such as foot warmers, lap robes and quilts. These accessories are displayed on vehicles in a display that is unique to Montana and the northwest.

This sleigh was the People's Choice in the Carriage Show during the 2006 Expo. It is an Albany Style Cutter dated around 1890. A cutter is a small, light sleigh usually single seated and pulled by one horse. This is a swell body. This cutter was found in a Gal latin Gateway blacksmith shop. It was manufactured by Northwestern MFG. of Ft. Atkinson, WI and was restored by the owners in 1995, Harlan and Joal Olson. Montana Draft Horse Expo - Peoples Choice award
